UPWATER. Understanding groundwater Pollution to protect and enhance WATER quality (2022-2026)
The main objective of Upwater project is to evaluate the effectiveness of different technological and non-technological measures (e.g. regulation, governance and nature-based solutions) to minimize groundwater pollution by acting at source. This will be achieved by the increase in the scientific knowledge about groundwater contaminants, the development of modelling tools, the simulation of scenarios for proposed measures, the development of a participatory framework to analyze and prioritize measures and the provision of policy recommendations at the local, community and EU levels. In addition, bioengineering solutions will be tested to mitigate groundwater pollution in three case studies: Barcelona (Spain), Athens (Greece) and Stengaarden (Denmark). FNCA is participates as beneficiary on this project and is leading workpackage 6, on “Stakeholder engagement, policy assessment and governance recommendations”. SMART.MET. Smart Water Metering (2017-2022)
The objective of the proposal is to drive the development of new technologies to manage smart metering data collection and management, driven by a group of 7 water utilities through a joint Pre Commercial Procurement (PCP). They are supported by 6 expert organizations for assessing the technologies, implement the new procurement procedures and disseminate the outcomes of the project to other utilities and solutions suppliers. The project is developed through different phases: preparation and design of the pre-commercial tender (PCP), execution of the PCP procedure, evaluation of the implementation and results of the PCP procedure and dissemination of the project. The FNCA, beneficiary of the project, contributes with its experience in water governance, citizen participation and collaboration between researchers, users and other interested parties. AGUAMOD. Development of a water resource management platform during low water periods in the SUDOE region (2016-2019)
Aguamod is an Interreg-Sudoe project that aims at strengthening the cooperation between managers and land users in the area of water resource management in Southwest Europe (SUDOE), by jointly developing and sharing the implementation of innovative methodologies. The objective of AGUAMOD is to jointly build a platform for integrated water resource management during low water periods with all stakeholders in water management (managers, economic stakeholders, users and civil society) in south-west Europe. The AGUAMOD platform will combine an evaluation of the watershed’s water needs (drinking water, agriculture, industry, environmental flows etc.) with numerical models that simulate the stocks and flows of water in all parts of the watershed.
FERTINNOWA. Transfer of INNOvative techniques for sustainable WAter use in FERtigated crops (2016-2018)
The main objective of the FERTINNOWA thematic network is to create a meta-knowledge database on innovative technologies and practices for fertigation of horticultural crops. FERTINNOWA will also build a knowledge exchange platform to evaluate existing and novel technologies (innovation potential, synergies, gaps, barriers) for fertigated crops and ensure wide dissemination to all stakeholders involved of the most promising technologies and best practices. FNCA is participating as associate partner on a voluntary basis. More information: https://www.fertinnowa.com/
TRIVERS. Implementing the water framework directive for temporary rivers: tools for the assessment of their ecological status (2014-2018)
The aim of the TRivers project is to provide European river basin authorities and other interested parties with a software tool (TREHS, Temporary Rivers' Ecological and Hydrological Status) to determine whether a river is temporary or not and to properly assess its ecological state. This software is based on a predictive model of the evolution of river characteristics over time and will detect whether the temporality is due to the natural characteristics of a river, to climate changes or to human action. FNCA is participating as associate partner on a voluntary basis. More information: http://www.lifetrivers.eu
EDGE. End-to-end Demonstrator for improved decision making in the water sector in Europe (2015-2017), coordinated by the Center for Ecology and Hydrology (UK), the EDGE is a proof-of-concept research project which will combine climate data and a state-of-the-art multi-model hydrological modelling chain to deliver a demonstration water-oriented information service. The EDgE team will work with key European stakeholders representative of private and public sectors to jointly develop and tailor approaches and techniques to assist them in using improved climate information in decision-making, and support development of climate change adaptation and mitigation policies. By placing stakeholders at the heart of the research, EDgE bridges the gap between the data generated by climatological and hydrological models and the information needed by decision-makers. The FNCA participates as stakeholder. November 2015 to December 2017
Water Crimes. Increasing knowledge and assessing risks and threats of crimes against water in Europe (2016-2017), coordinated by the SiTI Security and Safety Department, the goal of the WATER CRIMES research project is to provide the first strategic analysis of crimes against water resources in Europe. WATER CRIMES project will advance the existing knowledge on water crimes today (inventory) and in a mid-term scenarios in Europe (outlook). The WATER CRIMES project aims to advance knowledge in this field through four main activities:Developing an inventory of water crimes, analysing the potential impacts of water crimes in Europe, developing a mid-term outlook of crime trends and developing policy recommendations and mitigation strategies. 2016-2017.

Project “Du Ru de la Lande” (2005): Management of the stormwater in the big urban areas: integration of the local and regional responsibilities for the accomplishment of the Water Framework Directive, leaded by FNCA, the project team was integrated by water experts from Spain, France, United Kingdom and Italy. The overall goals of this project, which takes as case study “du Ru de La Lande” (Val de Marne, France), were to reduce the risk of floods due to the stormwater flows drained in urban areas, to avoid the environmental impacts on the acuatic ecosystems due to the colapse of sewers and the consequent overflow of stormwater and to minimize the risks in public health due to this type of direct discharge of sewage and rainwater during storms. Funded by the Département du Val de Marne, France. 2005.
